Abstract

Slums, favelas, and shantytowns are immensely condensed areas. The population in slums is increasing daily; however, the slums’ perimeters are limited. That is majorly because slums or unwanted areas are land-locked and limited in space by other types of development. If not land-locked, they are not permitted to grow by law. The typology of buildings in slums is small, due to structural limitations. Heavy structure built with no foundation - by the residents themselves - will definitely be shaky and unstable. The project will help develop a temporary/light structure that allows for vertical growth, with no risk of structural failure. This will allow more families to have a secure roof, without having to worry about a sudden collapse. Moreover, the light structure will allow for more creative spaces to be designed, further enhancing the state of which slums are in currently.

Temporary spaces are common all around, but not in the form of a shelter. We see temporary event spaces, kiosks, and exhibitions, but rarely a shelter.

Will temporary structure be the solution to fluctuating population densities all around the world? Will we be able to experiment more with urban design and streetscape design knowing that it could be removed easily?
