WRD in class 4/22

The week

  • Says Google glass will let us be more social and we will no longer have to always be checking our device… that is contradictory because we will literally always have a device to look at while wearing the glasses
  • People are more likely to ignore a phone if it is in their pocket but if something literally comes up right in front of your eyes it is more likely you will pay attention to it
  • How will this make it more social? Won’t it make us be more in our own bubble?

SlashGear

  • Some people may like being able to record your whole life, but it would take away the nostalgia and change the way we see life
  • Can lose memory because of how our devices will remember everyone for us
  • Why would we want to have a recording of our whole life? There are lots of bad memories people would not want to have replayed for them
  • This also brings up the issue of privacy… anyone could take a picture of anything at anytime without being noticed

Editorial

  • Glasses caused a fight to break out In McDonalds, if more people had these glasses no one would have privacy and there could be more violence
  • Having pictures of the perpetrators would be good for legal reasons but is this fair?

  • Product is too excessive

  • People would become addicted to them

  • Would not make people more social

  • Could help people with disabilities

  • Very ugly glasses, but there will be advancements in this in the future

  • The design seems cool because of how you can see through the projected images, but how can people pay attention to the screen and the actually reality in front of them

  • “Freeing” but also not at the same time…

Question: Why do people think we need anything more?

This article on Google Glass, along with the other articles we read concerning the usage of technology in this generation, was very appropriate for this class. It offers the question of whether or not a product such as these glasses is necessary for humans. I say that no, they are not necessary, and are a perfect example of the abuse of technology this generation has gotten used to.

Taking a class where technology played such a big part in the success of a student was very interesting to me. Personally, I think that in the classroom technology can be extremely helpful. Having so much information at my fingertips while writing a research paper made the process much easier. However I also believe that it can be a huge distraction. With all of the apps, social media, blogs, etc. that is available at all time makes it very hard to focus on real life. People are getting so caught up in the "life" they have online that being in the present is not as easy.

Socially, I have been able to limit myself with technology. I do not have a Twitter, Instagram, etc. and I do not text a lot. Academically, it is much harder for me. Trying to study while there are people contacting you via computer and phone is very overwhelming. However in WRD, having my laptop in front of me at all times was less distracting than I thought. Because of the in class activities and Mr. Lyon trying to engage students as best as he could, I was able to stay away from distracting websites for the most part. But I still do not like how a big part of being successful in this class is with the use of technology. Programs such as Prezi, Microsoft and Digication are a struggle for me. The fact that I am being forced to utilize these and being able to "compose in electronic environments" is a specifically spelled out learning goal for this course does not sit well with me. Yes, we are in a generation that it is a must to be able to use some forms of technology, but the incredible amount of technology that a college student is expected to use in just ridiculous.
