The Negative Consequences of a Lack of Nutrition Education and Sleep Deprivation

With limited wallets and health resources, college students are often faced with nutrional barriers. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), eating habits and sleep patterns are critical determinants of college students attaining a healthy lifestyle. Group three's Digication page explores nutrition education in a college environment and the effects of sleep deprivation on food choices. After an analysis of the lack of nutrition education and sleep deprivation on college students, this project offers viable solutions to help create a healthy college lifestyle.




 

College Student Population Profile

(18-24 year olds)

  • Women's bodies achieve peak, fully grown; Men's bodies still have potential to grow.
  • College setting is the first time young adults are living away from home and are independent.
  • Young adults learn the difficulty of financial independence.
  • Young adults have inconsistent sleep cycles.
  • College setting can provide detrimental influences such as: drugs, alcohol and unsafe sex.
  • College students may not be located in the same place for all for years (ie: study abroad, transitions from dorm life to off-campus living, university transfers).

All of these factors that affect college students will also have an impact on the food choices they make.
