Wang and Burris (1997) (full pdf version of the article is available at the link above) discussed the concept of photovoice as a unique alternative to exploring public health issues from the participants, rather than policymakers perspectives.

Nutrition and health across the lifespan is a topic with growing popularity and implications that cross over, social, economic, psychological, political, cultural and biological lines.  The perspectives of the populations affected by the food policies, however, may often go unnoticed.

Throughout the quarter the students of Nsg 200 will be charged with capturing images through photos, videos, advertisements and various multimedia methods that provide a platform for the perspectives of various individuals to be heard.  During the quarter Nsg 200 students were asked to relate various course activities to the food choices of their assigned groups including:

  1. service learning activities within various community settings,
  2. performed an individual dietary assessment,
  3. completed a grocery shopping tour from the perspective of their assigned population,
  4. watched various documentaries,
  5. and read articles & books that help to evoke interest and awareness of issues related to nutrition and health and

Each group's final digication page project should demonstrate the following:

  • The population assigned to each group
  • The biological, political, social, cultural, economic or psychological nutrition & health related issues that affect the assigned populations (300-500 words)
  • 10-20 multimedia images (photos, videos, advertisements) captured during the 10 weeks of the term and a brief narrative about the issue raised in each image ;
  • Two (2) peer reviewed journal articles that provides insight into nutrition & health related topics that affect the assigned population
  • Three (3) recommendations/ implications for social change that college students, parents, community groups &/ or concerned citizens should consider to meet the nutrition & health related needs of the assigned population.
  • Be sure to give a citation in APA format for your references on each page

Each group will have an opportunity to review another group's digication page through a peer evaluation during finals week.  For more information on updating a digication page review the quickstart copy.pdf

Special Considerations- Use pictures/ video of products, food, food labels, yourself, classmates, buildings, communites etc.  Please avoid the use of front view pictures of people in which you can see faces or distinguish someone's identity as this would require research approval. You can use back views of groups of people in a classroom setting.

Note-This is an example of a published article that used photovoice- racism and photovoice.pdf
