Dear Reader,

I’d like to welcome you to the first annual edition of Global Voices, the electronic magazine published by the Collaborative for Multilingual Writing and Research (CMWR) and the University Center for Writing-based Learning (UCWbL). This publication marks the end of the CMWR’s first year of operations and it is a celebration of the work of DePaul’s multilingual writing community.

The CMWR team, (from left) Adam Cutler,

Ana Ribero, Jasmine Pacheco, and Elliot Crumpley

The CMWR was founded on the belief that linguistic diversity and multilingual writing enrich the academic community. In Global Voices, we aim to emphasize how linguistic diversity is an inherent part of DePaul's ethos by showcasing academic and creative works about language learning and linguistic diversity in their broadest senses.

In this issue, you will find a collection of literacy narratives in which writers of various backgrounds describe their experiences with linguistic diversity. You will also find texts that reflect on learning a second language and delve into the fascinating connection between language and identity. In addition, this issue contains annotated bibliographies of resources for teachers and students of language. Finally, our pages feature the photography of Joe Olivier, who has experienced the richness of linguistic diversity through his travels.

I hope you enjoy this first issue of Global Voices and that you look for us each Spring.

Sincerely,

Ana M. Ribero

Coordinator, The Collaborative for Multilingual Writing and Research
