step four

Title your ePortfolio. (You can change this title at any time.)

The ePortfolio Web Address (URL) automatically changes to match your title.

If you want to customize your ePortfolio Web Address (URL) to be different than your Title, click the Edit button.

quick tip

Why change your URL?

If you want a web address that you think is easier than your ePortfolio title to remember or share, you can easily change your URL in Digication.

Example:

The very ePortfolio you're reading now is titled "ePortfolios@DePaul" but its web address is https://depaul.digication.com/gethelp.

If you want to customize a link to an ePortfolio for a certain audience, like a potential employer, consider changing your URL for their ease of locating and identifying your ePortfolio.

Example:

You copy a version of an ePortfolio titled "Your Name's Examples of Work" for a specific job application at Reflections On Learning, LLC, and edit your URL to include the employer's name and your status as an applicant: your_name's_application_materials_for_

reflections_on_learning_llc

step five

Choose a template.

quick tip

Why Start with DePaul Default?

By choosing DePaul Default, you'll start off with a very simple but highly customizable ePortfolio. The other templates will contain features that may not necessarily be applicable to your project. For a class ePortfolio, your instructor should specify if you should use a template other than DePaul Default.

What else should I know about the DePaul Default template?

    • A DePaul header image (aka banner) will automatically be at the top. You can change this on the Settings screen.
    • The DePaul Default template renders hyperlinks (URLs) as blue, and then purple after they are clicked.

step six

Select your Permissions.

The UCWbL recommends beginning with Private to me, which means no one else can see your work in progress.

To add another viewer, such as your professor, click on Custom Permissions, located to the right.

Visit Change Privacy Settings for more options once your portfolio is ready to share.

quick tip

What do the other Permissions mean?

Private within DePaul University: This means any user on the DePaul Digication network can see what you've published to your ePortfolio at any time.

Public: This means anyone in the world with internet access can see what you've published to your ePortfolio. They do not need Digication accounts to find or view your work.

What Permission settings should I use?

The Perrmission settings you choose to use will depend on how accessible you want your ePortfolio to be. If this is just for a class, you probably want to have limited permission settings. However, if this is for a professional ePortfolio that tries to attract potential employers outside of the DePaul Digication network, then you'll want to make the ePortfolio public.

step seven

Choose whether or not you'd like your ePortfolio to have tags.

quick tip

What are Tags?

Tags help you label and organize the different and similar kinds of content you have in your ePortfolio. They also can function as keywords that search engines latch on to when someone surfs the web.

Should I use Tags?

That will depend on the type of project you're doing. If you want your ePortfolio to be available to as many web users as possible, then you'll certainly want to use tags to attract search engines. If you don't want your ePortfolio to be available that easily, then you can choose to not allow tags. As always, you can go back and change this later on the Settings screen.

step eight

Choose who you'd like to have permission to leave comments on the various pages of your ePortfolio. For now, we recommend staying with the default settings that require

approval to be seen on your ePortfolio.

quick tip

When should I allow Comments?

Comments are a great way to get some valuable feedback on your work. By allowing comments, your classmates and instructor can leave their thoughts on your pages at any time. Think of it as an ongoing peer review.

If, however, you're not looking for feedback, then it's probably best to not allow them in the first place. Remember, you can always go back and change this setting at any time.
