One challenge in describing your writing process in a way that's visually and logisitically coherent and explanatory is how to present drafts, changes you made in those drafts, and your reflections on that process.

Using Digication's table-and-columns feature, you can exploit the columns to show drafts in one column and your discussion and reflections in another column. Your readers can then read your work and your discussion of it side by side.

See Digication's Insert Table command:

Important: Once you have inserted your table, note the Table Cells Properties icon, which is more powerful than it looks:

With your cursor in the right-hand column, use Table Cells Properties and the Table Cells Properties > Advanced tab to align your text vertically ("Top") and to set the table column sizes: use 300 pixels for the left-hand (draft) column, and 200 pixels for the right-hand (annotation) column.

Set those sizes before you start writing in the columns, and you'll be happy. Or happier.

Let's recap:

  • Enable text editor
  • Insert table
  • Align text: "Top"
  • Set column sizes: 300/200

Now you are in a position to imagine some creative problem-solving strategies for a perpetual challenge: how to visually represent your writing process:

A table caption might go here -- for digital portfolio purposes, you can productively use this space to introduce drafts, your processes, and what readers might look for in annotations, in the right-hand column, below.

In my first draft, I had incorporated two sources, and both my peer reviewers and the instructor suggested that I should find, analyze, and integrate at least three more sources. I found several more, and focused on one from a legislative context and one from an advocacy group in Nevada.

For my second draft, then, I included those sources while adding a section on some contexts for health-care reform that I had not addressed in my first draft.

I also chose to do a rhetorical analysis of a widely distibuted chart ("Spending Distribution by Contributors") that reveals how complicated my original advocacy project was to research -- the effect of health-care reform on single mothers -- and included an extended section on that problem.
