Save the Children

Save the Children reaches out to children in the United States, as well as around the world to give what every child deserves – a healthy start. Save the Children gives these children an opportunity to learn, and be protected by future harm. When a disaster strikes, Save the Children put the children’s needs first. They advocate for and achieve a large-scale change for the children. Their mission is to save children’s lives.

In 2012, Save the Children has helped over 240,000 children in 18 states through their education, health and emergency response programs. Nearly 1 in 4 American children are living in poverty, which is equivalent to 16 million kids who understand what it means to not have something, and to go to bed hungry every night. The children may not have access to books, healthy foods, and places to play like playgrounds to receive the proper exercise. This may mean, no bright future for these children, and Save the Children is attempting to help with this.

Save the Children helps children respond to a serious disaster if it were to take place. They are committed to reducing the impact of disasters on children through teaching preparedness, response, recovery, and advocacy. Since 2005, Save the Children has become the national leader for children in times of a disaster. Through their programs, they have put the unmet needs of children, and the individuals taking care of them first, and only first. A child’s brain is mostly developed by the age of 5, but children in poverty are less likely to attend preschool and they often live in homes where there are no learning activities.

Save the Children wants to ensure that all the children they receive have a brighter future, and to give them an equal opportunity to learn and grow early. Save the Children have early steps to school success programs that lay a foundation of language and literacy skills for children at an early age. This will help them enter school prepared, and ready to succeed. More than 23 million U.S. children are overweight or obese. The obesity rates continue to increase, and ages 6-11 had quadruped over the past four decades. Save the Children impact on these areas. The program designs healthy choices that expose children to healthier ways of living through physical activity, nutrition lessons, and balanced food choices so that they can live healthy and active. Save the Children teaches the children to eat well and be physically active at an early age, so they can continue to this regimen to grow up to be healthy adults.

Save the Children has also created programs to help the children’s literacy improvement. They believe that displaying a love of learning at an early age is to ensure for the children’s success in school and life itself. They offer an effective school-based program to help the disadvantaged students in the U.S. Save the Children’s literacy program and curriculum in science and math help children from kindergarten through sixth grade stay on track. On top of everything Save the Children does for these young kids, they also help children who may be at risk or already have been diagnosed with HIV or AIDS. Save the Children works to prevent this spread of the virus, and help protect the children already infected. With the support of donors, and partners, the program can help the communities care for the sick children, and provide support to them as well.

The community partner will be highly interested in this program, due to the fact that she works with homeless individuals every day, and her primary focus was to get children on the right track so they do not end up homeless in their future. For the children who are living in poverty, and maybe on the verge of losing their home, Save the Children can help them receive the education, health, awareness, and medicine they need to grow up to be healthier, and well-rounded adults. The community partner could benefit from this program to help more children, and be part of inspiring lives, like she does everyday.

Housing First Logic Model

Kaitlin Brunner

A large majority of individuals suffering from homelessness became homeless due to financial crises and employment issues, which prevent people from being able to pay mortgages and rent. When this occurs, individuals find themselves relying heavily on a network of community homeless organizations and government subsidy programs. Additionally, if these individuals apply to traditional public housing agencies, they may be waiting long periods of time before they receive housing assistance. In the mean time, they are then often forced to stay in different overnight emergency shelter sites every night, or sleep in parks or cars.

A new program that aims to restructure the traditional housing system is the Housing First Program. This program provides immediate housing to those groups that are homeless, or at-risk to become homeless. This program would involve collaboration between several community partners to form one multi-faceted network that would provide services to those accessing the Housing First Program. Some of these partners include housing agencies, social service organizations, and medical agencies. With the combined efforts of these three networks, homeless populations could access a wide variety of services through just this one program. The Housing First Program places families and individuals in housing units that were constructed specifically for this program. Placing people in these units first and foremost is the central highlight of this program, rather than placing them on long lists to receive housing that could take months. The program identifies rapid re-housing as the key element to ending homelessness.

Journeys the Road Home would deeply benefit from becoming a part of a program such as this because although they already provide some of these services to their clients, their partnership with other housing agencies and medical agencies would be strengthened in the community. Furthermore, by using housing placement as the primary solution, instead of the last component of the process, clients would become increasingly less reliant on Journey’s services, and increasingly more self-reliant.

The Housing First Program would produce a number of beneficial outcomes for both the community and for homeless groups. In theory, this program would prevent homelessness from occurring, it would reduce the governmental and medical costs associated with the traditional system, and it would improve homeless individuals’ chances to become self-sustaining and employed. Thereby, reducing their reliance on government and non-profit services. Overall, these three benefits would create beneficial changes for the individuals themselves and the community at large.

To begin with, the Housing First Program would significantly prevent homelessness by placing people and families into housing units much faster than traditional housing agencies. Since rapid housing placement is the primary solution strategy, it would prevent people from becoming homeless to begin with, or at least, significantly reduce the amount of time they would be without shelter.

The second theoretical benefit this program would provide is reduced governmental and medical taxes. The traditional system that provides services to homeless lacks a unified collaborative system that includes medical services, housing and social services all in one. Homeless individuals on the streets are at a higher risk for medical issues due to being unprotected from the elements. When this occurs, homeless individuals rely primarily on hospitals and emergency rooms as their primary source of medical care. This in turn, comes out of taxpayer dollars to cover these costs. However, if homeless people were provided with housing first, they would be less likely to require emergency medical services. In addition, if medical services were implemented within the Housing First Program, individuals could receive medical care through this program, and be less dependent on hospitals and external governmental systems.

The third benefit that could come from the Housing First Program is the improved conditions of the individuals, and the increased opportunities for these individuals to become employed and eventually self-sustaining. People who are housed, in contrast to those relying on traditional services, would worry less about finding immediate shelter, and become more focused on improving their situations day by day. By maintaining permanent housing, individuals could possibly begin to move towards becoming increasingly self-sustaining, and eventually become less reliant on non-profit services and governmental assistance.

The Housing First Program offers a large variety of benefits for both homeless groups and for the community at large. By preventing homelessness to begin with, families and individuals could focus their energies on getting back on their feet, instead of worrying about the next emergency shelter site they need to go to. Additionally, government taxes and medical costs associated with homeless care could be reduced overall, which would benefit the homeless as well as the taxpayers. Moreover, homeless people would have better chances of becoming self-sustaining, productive members of society if they are provided with housing first. Journeys the Road Home would definitely benefit from promoting a program such as this in the community because they would strengthen their partnerships with the housing agencies, medical services, and together these organizations could become a more unified system. Additionally, individuals would become less reliant on Journey’s services if they were provided with housing as a primary solution, because they would become more focused on developing their skill sets and employment opportunities, rather than worrying about the next place they will sleep that night.

Logic Model Explanation

In order to be able to provide services for those affected by homelessness in the northwest suburbs, JOURNEYS needs more support from its community members. In the past, JOURNEYS was funded strictly through donations, however, recently donations have decreased, and the organization had to take out a line of credit to keep its doors open. To date, JOURNEYS has yet been able to pay back the line of credit and continues to struggle with having enough funds to maintain its facilities and services. In order to keep JOURNEYS open, the organization needs to empower and create networks between its residents and business owners through a program of bringing awareness of homelessness within the community.

Community empowerment is a method through which community members realize that they have control of their own lives and can influence the community (Moritsugu, Wong, &Duffy, 2010).  . The combined individual efforts of community members can create social change that will benefit the community. The more knowledgeable community members are about the community and the greater the respect and trust they feel from fellow community members, the greater their ability to have a positive influence on the community will be (Moritsugu, et al., 2010).  The proposed program for bringing about awareness and raising community support of homelessness would use empowerment by informing community members of the current high rates of homelessness and the harsh winter conditions they deal with every day while living on the streets. Community members would become informed through JOURNEYS volunteers and workers speaking out to community members at local elementary and high schools, colleges, businesses, and events. JOURNEYS would help community members understand that their efforts can have a huge impact on JOURNEYS’ ability to stay open and to continue to serve homeless people throughout the northwest suburbs. Once community members would be informed of the current situation with homelessness, JOURNEYS would encourage its community members to make small steps toward change, such as small donations and volunteering, that would in turn create community empowerment through the combined efforts of the community members. JOURNEYS would show its respect and trust for its community members through thank you cards sent out to community members’ homes, which would encourage community members to continue to support the organization and the cause of homelessness.

Networking within a community are relationships established between various community members from various facets of the community that can include businesses, schools, various services, and local residents that communicate with one another through social relationships and work as a group to keep each other informed about events and resources that can benefit the community (Moritsugu, et al., 2010). Networking is an excellent tool for JOURNEYS to use in order to raise awareness of their current need for donations and raising general awareness of the current issues pertaining to homelessness in the northwest suburbs. Through networking, JOURNEYS can encourage various community partners to combine their resources, time, and efforts to create more support for homelessness. A network that could be beneficial between to JOURNEYS could be between local colleges, elementary and high schools, places of worship, various businesses, various clinics, and hospitals. All of these network members could work together to organize events that help fundraise and collect items, such as coats and food for JOURNEYS. The events organized by the network would also enable JOURNEYS to have adequate funds to keep their doors open and would help combat homelessness in the northwest suburbs. The funds and items collected during events would help JOURNEYS provide services for their clients and would provide them with essentials for the winter. Another way a network could also support JOURNEYS and homelessness is by reaching out to residents within  the community and getting more people involved by sending out fliers to inform people about what JOURNEYS does and explaining how members of the community can help.

A program of raising awareness of homelessness and getting more community support for  JOURNEYS  through community empowerment and networking  would accomplish many short and long term goals. In the short term, it would help feed, clothe, and hopefully house many homeless people during the upcoming winter. In a longer period of time, more community support, empowerment, and networking could help Journeys pay of its line of credit, will enable JOURNEYS to keep its doors open, will help get more volunteers to help out at JOURNEYS, and will raise attention to how important it is for community members to get involved in combating homelessness. Finally, in the long term, a program of raising awareness through empowerment and networking can enable JOURNEYS to thrive in its efforts to help homeless people transition back into everyday life and will help the rates of homelessness in the northwest suburbs steadily decrease. Also, if enough people in the community get involved, they could have an impact on helping establish affordable housing in the community by influencing policies, which would enable more homeless people to get one step closer toward getting back into living on their own.
