A student recently asked me what inspired me to become a teacher.  I reflect that an acrostic of the word “Inspiration” can describe my role as an educator in the classroom:

Innovator:

  • Utilizing technology in the classroom
  • Challenging myself in order to encourage my students
  • Thinking of new ideas and ways to educate my students
  • Taking learning beyond the classroom

Nurturer:

  • Inspiring my students to believe in their own abilities
  • Believing that all students are capable of learning
  • Fostering students ideas
  • Praising and encouraging as they continue to build their self-esteem

Safe:

  • Creating an environment where all students have a voice
  • Maintaing an environment where students feel safe to share ideas and free from harm
  • Allowing students the freedom to explore and be free from judgment

Prepared:

  • Creating lesson plans prior to teaching
  • Flexibility in how the lesson is executing
  • Modifying plans as needed to meet the needs of my students

Individualistic:

  • Learn about my students and their interests, both inside and outside of the classroom
  • Promote the acceptance of diversity
  • Differentiate instruction to ensure that each student is challenged

Respectful:

  • Creating a reciprocal relationship between my students and myself
  • Model how to treat others with respect
  • Extend respect to administation, colleagues, and parents

Advocate:

  • Listening to the needs and concerns of my students
  • Speaking for my students when they are unable to do so for themselves
  • Making their safety both inside and outside of the school community a priority

Trustworthy:

  • Ensuring that my students feel safe to communicate with me
  • Creating a reciprocal relationship of trust between my students and myself
  • Establishing clear expectations of my students

Integrative:

  • Combining core subjects to improve skills
  • Connecting core subjects to the arts
  • Collaborating with the community to further knowledge beyond the classroom

Observer:

  • Analyze my students' progress and skill levels
  • Learn from my colleagues
  • Investigate ways to connect with the community

Network:

  • Collaborate with colleagues on best pratices and lesson plans
  • Maintain memberships in professional organizations
  • Connect with parents
