What is an Irish Grandpa?

Someone who can sit by the organ and play-

All

               Night

                              Long.

Someone whose ears curl when he thinks he is being talked about.

Someone with curly grey hair and an Irish brogue.

Someone who could drink ale by the barrel

And whose favorite song is Danny Boy

Someone who always sits at the same spot by the table in the kitchen

Someone who doesn’t seem to care only for himself

And yet when I pass by the old house with my Dad,

It feels empty, it feels like there is something missing in my life

Is there some secret that haunts the green grass that my Dad used to cut with an old motorless lawn mower?

The last time I was alone there was after Easter when I was younger, and I found

An unturned plastic egg filled with candy from the egg hunt.

The park was just blocks away, where I almost fell to my death from a concussion

When my grandpa was sitting at the table with others from my family

And I was alone with my uncle and my sister

And all the while my grandpa’s ears were curled

Because he could sense something was going on
