Critical Journal for Class of 7/28/15

            Today in class we talked a great deal about our own experiences, especially pertaining to what we have experienced so far at our volunteering sights.  One of the stories that stuck with me the most was that of the student who was a counselor at camp, who said he had a good experience with the campers.  I can kind of relate this to my own experience, because when I was younger, every summer I would go to summer camp, and play with and associate and completely admire with my camp counselors.  Some people may think that this volunteering job isn’t that important, but it is very important, because, as was discussed in class, kids are completely molded by their surroundings and environments, and a good role model makes all the difference when trying to tame a group of kids. 

            Another girl said that she was discriminated against, against her religion, when she was trying to obtain signatures for a worthy cause.  After hearing this I thought that the situation was completely unnecessary, as Chicago is the third most populated city in the United States, meaning that our differences should bring us together, not separate us.  Right away I associated the person that made the discrimination as ignorant, even though I didn’t know that much about the person’s background, because by saying something like that, to anybody, this person deserves to be reprimanded.  I wondered how the student handled the situation; her temperament in class when telling the story made me think that she handled the situation well, but if it were me, I would have been angry, and would have said something to my supervisor.  I think that the student handled the situation well by not overreacting, but something like that is so horrible that it could have been on the news.  It just goes to show that injustice can occur anywhere, even in situations where people are trying to make peace and conflict resolution happen.
