Fear Not Faith

Fear is the caption over the photo

That engulfs me

It is the leaf that gets in your hair

Of where you don’t know came

It’s the thoughts in the back of his head

That God doesn’t think you could handle

Like hers

Faith is crossing the street blindly

And not getting hit

It is folding your hands together to pray, on the bus

So that an angel sits next to you

It’s wearing shoes that you know might be dirty

But that you hope are good to go

Fear is chewing with your mouth open

In front of your boss

It is not tying your shoelace while you are bicycling

It is the clouds that form overhead but don’t

Emit raindrops

So that you are left dry

It is feeling different about someone, but still

Not knowing

If that person is good, or trustworthy

It is not turning up your furnace because

You can’t afford it

Faith is doing it anyway

It is tying your shoe at the intersection

It is running in the rain

It is going to a basketball game with

That previously foreseen person

And liking it

Faith is praying the moment before you fall asleep

And having a dream to live for

Just like this poem

It is the bow in her hair

The cast on his leg

The computer on my lap

The sun at 5:15am that defeats

Your prayers

Faith can’t live without fear

Because faith comes from God

Fear wants to defeat faith

Because it never comes from nothing

When I learned to pray it was a whole new world

That came to me

It’s like sleeping forever

It’s like getting what you want

It’s a way to meditate so that

You don’t need to feel productive

The sun will always come through, though,

Even if you see fear despise faith

And faith defeat fear
