Poem- Danger
Danger is when you can’t see what’s in front of you because of anger
When you can’t look behind you out of fear
When you don’t know if the sun is going to rise
Or the moon will find it’s eclipse, behind the tree at the edge of the alley
It’s when you don’t know if God is looking at you
Or a demon is mocking you
It’s when your cheeks burn, and you can feel the red under the corners of your eyes
It’s when you don’t know what to do next
Or when you can’t look back to that dream you had last night that made you feel free
It’s when you hold out a hand that no one wants to take
Out of spite or jealousy, disgrace or regret
It’s when you try to jump the fence and your jeans get caught
Or when you throw the ball too hard and it misses the recipient’s hands
Or when you don’t follow orders and you get blamed
It’s when the battery of your computer loses power and you are screwed for the rest of the afternoon
It’s when your dog runs away, and you can’t catch up to him
Or when the coyote you usually see walking on the side street crawls under the space
Of your backyard fence and eats the bread you left out for the birds
It’s when your imagination leaves you stranded and you don’t know what to write
As the late evening light fades over the streetlight where a cardinal sometimes sits
And you want to keep on writing, but you don’t want to give it all away
And you close your laptop
And your golden retriever lies by you, instead, and joins you in watching Netflix
