Spring 2012 Peer Tutor &

Mentor Summit

The second annual event, the 2012 Peer Tutor and Mentor Summit was organized around a theme for the first time, "What They Take With Them."  The theme was inspired by the Peer Writing Tutor Alumni Research Project's article, "What They Take With Them," which discussed the collaborative survey of alumni tutors from three large writing centers -- the largest study of its kind at the time -- which sought to uncover what professional and life skills tutors take with them after they leave a Writing Center and enter the workforce.  The other significant inspiration for the Summit's first theme was Historian William Cronon’s article “’Only Connect’...The goals of a Liberal Education," in which he argued that freedom and growth are at the center of liberal education and that we must realize those truths if we are to take anything away from our time in University.

Expanding on that concept, the 2012 Summit sought to ask what skills, knowledge, and experiences our tutors, mentors, administrators, and even constituents and students take with them once they move beyond our centers and services.  Reflecting on our work and our missions, the attendees took part in conversation cafes, a keynote address from Art Munin, and Round Robin sessions focusing on our interactions with one another, with students, and on our professional development.
