 The Company that makes Newport Tobacco Products.

Community Development and Involvement-

 

Located in Greensboro, North Carolina, Lorillard has been well respected in the Greensboro community. Some of its notable projects include:

  • A 1 million dollar donation to the International Civil Rights Center & Museum of Greensboro.
  •  A 1 million dollar gift to the Steven Tanger Performing Arts Center in Greensboro.
  • Maintaining an annual donation that matches 10% of the local United Way’s annual collection. As of 2001, Lorillard has donated over 10 million dollars to the local United Way.
  • 250,000 dollars to the construction of the “Downtown Greenway”, a 4 mile walking and biking trail that loops around Downtown Greensboro.
  • Brings high paying employment to the city of Greensboro.
  • Has helped African American families in Greensboro purchase homes and send their children to college.

Environment-

Lorillard Inc. does not use animals in testing of products. Additionally, Lorillard Inc. has contributed over 80 million dollars to their Youth Smoking Prevention Program, which educated parents about the dangers of youth smoking.

 

Employee Relations-

Lorillard Inc. maintains in its Code of Conduct and Business Ethics, that discrimination and harassment are not permitted. Moreover, Lorillard Inc. also states in its company code that a safe and healthy work environment must be maintained. Additionally, Lorillard Inc. has established a no retaliation policy towards employees who report misconduct.

 

Labor Practices/ Wages-

Lorillard Inc. has sought to reduce egregious labor practices. Additionally, Lorillard Inc. pays its employees in accordance with fair wages. Unfortunatley, Lorillard along with other US tobacco companies have been prosectued for child labor laws.

 

Legal Issues-

Of course, as a Big Tobacco Company, Lorillard Inc. has been sued many times for the health risks associated with cigarettes. However, Lorillard Inc. has complied with all mandates and regulation for the tobacco industry, and has implemented counter measures by allowing its customers to be educated on the risks of smoking. Lorillard Inc. works alongside the ATF, FDA, U.S. surgeon general’s office to ensure legality in business practices.

 

Fair Trade Practices-

Lorillard Inc. is currently researching the possibility of implementing fair-trade practices.

 

Fiscal Responsibility-

Lorillard Inc. maintains all regulations by the SEC. Lorillard practices transparency and published all investor related materials on the company website. Lorillard Inc. is a publically traded firm on the NYSE and maintains all necessary compliance for public trading.

 

 CSR Strategy:

Lorillard Inc. is committed to its proactive strategy in CSR. Lorillard Inc. is a major part of the well-being of the Greensboro community, and has maintained the company’s responsibility to the community through philanthropic contributions and employment. Additionally, Lorillard Inc. is deeply committed to preventing youth smoking. Furthermore, Lorillard Inc. is in compliance with all industry and public trading regulations. Lorillard Inc. informs its consumers the hazards and implications of smoking. By doing so, Lorillard Inc. fully admits their share of the responsibility to society, and leave the consumption decison to its     customers. 

 

Just because it creates a negative product, does not mean that Lorillard Inc. is not a socially responsible company!
